UK RSPB Nature of Farming Awards 2011:
Kate Humble, presenter of the BBC's ‘One Man and his Dog’ & 'Lambing Live' and RSPB President said: "All too often we hear about disagreements between conservation bodies and farmers when in reality both need each other more than ever and frequently work closely side by side for the benefit of the UK's amazing wildlife. The remarkable winners, Treshnish Farm on the beautiful Isle of Mull, prove that you can have a successful agricultural business and care deeply for the land, its biodiversity and the future. I salute them!"
Wildlife cameraman and TV presenter Gordon Buchanan, who grew up on Mull, said: “I’m so pleased for Carolyne and Somerset Charrington. Treshnish Farm is a worthy winner of this prestigious UK-wide award. It’s a reflection too of the hard work of many other environmentally-friendly farmers on Mull and Iona who also go the extra mile for wildlife. This farm and many others are vital to the survival of our wildflowers, butterflies, moths and the famous Mull birds including corncrakes, white-tailed eagles and those all-important farmland finches and waders. What a place!”
Comments from guests:
‘Thanks
to everyone for a truly memorable week in Shian. Just about everything exceeded our expectation. We hope the House Martins above the bedroom window make a success of their building. It was a privilege to share this part of Mull with you all.’ Mr and Mrs G., Leamington Spa.
Thank you very much for the lovely, beautifully decorated, cosy and well heated little house. When we're not out, we sit for hours in front of the window, can't take our eyes away from the beautiful views! Thank you very much for all.
M. and S., Paris. (Duill)
‘We would like to thank you for the privilege of staying in Toechtamhor last month. We were very comfortable and had a wonderful
two weeks exploring the area. Apart from the two storms, we saw a sunset 12 days out of 14 and the views to the other islands were magnificent. We watched golden eagles and probably white tailed sea eagles from the kitchen on several days, and the variety of fauna and flora was really fascinating. When we arrived it was early spring with the primroses everywhere and when we left the blue bells were out and the trees had greened magically. You are very lucky to see the complete yearly seasons
on Mull and we were pleased to see just part of this. Toechtamhor certainly has been improved to a high standard and we had enough sun for the solar panels to be very effective. Thank you again for a very memorable holiday and we wish you success for the rest of the season and in future.’
Mr and Mrs B., Middlesex.
‘The three of us really enjoyed that stay at Haunn, and we would like to thank and congratulate you for the cottage, the weather and your wonderful isle.’ Monsieur D, France. (West)
‘Thank you for making our time at Treshnish and Toechtamhor
so lovely. We look forward to next July.’ Mr and Mrs G., Yorkshire.
‘Our stay in
the Shieling seems like ages ago now, but was as wonderful and nourishing as ever. It’s so important that such places exist. ‘ R.A., Devon.
‘Thank you very much for the most wonderful holiday. We have had a great time. The Haunn Cottages are beautiful, so remote and peaceful. Lovely and snug in the evenings too, with the fire going! We have had lots of great days exploring the coastline, visiting beaches and taking a boat trip. 2 weeks is not enough time to see it all. We
hope all goes well with the farm and the cottages in the future, and we hope to come and stay here again in Treshnish.’ P and S., Kent. (East)
‘We have thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Mull. “Studio” is very well equipped from good duvets to decent cooking equipment. There has been plenty to keep the girls interested and thankfully the weather was kind. Many thanks for helping us to organize our stay and we would hope to return, I shall certainly be
recommending the cottages to friends and family. E.W., UK
‘A very BIG thankyou…. We just wanted to say what a fantastic week we had on Mull last week. Middle Cottage was beautiful, and our stay there was just perfect. We’ll definitely be back next year, Mull now has a special place in our hearts.’
PG., UK
‘We have so enjoyed our visit. The cottage is beautifully warm, comfortable and so well provided. It so deserves its rating. We would certainly love to come again but without the dogs! Although they were well behaved it was really impossible to photograph the wild life and any dreams of photographing otters was out of the question. Next time! Thank you.’
P and S., Devon Shieling
‘We enjoyed our stay at Haunn very much and found your commitment to the environment inspirational.’ D and T., Machynlleth, Wales.
‘Many thanks for a superb stay last week in West. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay , the location and your attention to detail in the cottage. We'd love to revisit! Many thanks
again and warm wishes for a successful year -we'll be in touch to book for next year if you're happy to accommodate us again.’ J.M., Cumbria.
‘My wife and I wanted to thank you for your warm welcome to Shieling cottage for our recent holiday and to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay on your farm. We both felt
that Shieling cottage was a wonderful place in which to stay and would like to come back next year for a fortnight, if we could! That will be dependent on our daughter's graduation dates but it would be wonderful to enjoy the peace and beauty of Treshnish point once again. Please accept our thanks and compliments for the standard of the accommodation - it really was a very special holiday. Hope to see you again in the future. Our best wishes for the continued success of your business. Kind regards.’
Mr and Mrs C.
‘Thank you for your lovely little house – it was a perfect place for my holiday. Best wishes.’
Shieling. Ms S.
Thank you for a lovely holiday. We had a wonderful time on Mull (and we didn’t want to leave!). We loved staying in the Studio and on the Farm too. It was both
a practical and a beautiful place to stay and therefore was central I think to our being able to wind down, relax and enjoy Mull as a whole family. The Studio was everything we’d hoped for (and was in our opinion very well represented both in terms of images and words on your website). It was large, bright, spacious and airy, beautifully and tastefully decorated, well designed and well-appointed with all the amenities we need as a family with three young children (or at least which make life easier!). This meant
that on the day or two we chose to stay around the house ‘cabin-fever’ was pretty much non-existent. Due to the spaciousness of the house and the way the different spaces have been cleverly designed and the way they interact, we were all able to be together without getting on top of one another. Thankfully however, most of the time the weather was sunny and warm and we were able to use the Studio as a marvelous welcoming base to which we could return as we explored Mull. Our children thought the Studio was really
cool and fun. They loved the box beds and ‘the bed up the spiral staircase’; we loved the Studio’s space, comfort and calmness and will especially remember the wonderful little sun porch with it’s spectacular views of Coll and beautiful sunsets.
We think your ‘little library’ next door to the Studio is great and we enjoyed being around the farm and having access to the walks and countryside on your land. Two of H.’s highlights was your duck and your ginger cat and L. and B. built a den and at least two
dams! Many, many thanks. The I. family, Aberdeenshire.
