The Location:

Award winning eco-friendly Treshnish and Haunn Cottages are situated on Treshnish Point, in a rural Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, abundant with wildlife, near Calgary, on the north west coast of the Isle of Mull, Scotland.

Treshnish Point is in the north west of the island and overlooks the tip of Calgary Bay.  It is almost an hour's drive from the ferry terminal at Craignure, and 45 minutes from the colourful capital Tobermory.

With nearly 4 miles of accessible coastline to explore – it takes in views from Ulva, Gometra, Iona, Treshnish Islands, Coll, Tiree, Rum, Eigg, Muck and Skye – and from 'the Cruachan' you can see as far as the Uists on a clear day and up to Knoydart and Torridon.
Within a few miles of Treshnish there are several beaches, (Calgary, as well as others) - hidden, and not so hidden, to discover and we are happy to point you in their direction.

The Island:

The Isle of Mull is one of the largest Inner Hebridean islands off the West Coast of Scotland.  It has a beautiful and varied landscape – reflecting in a sense the West Coast in miniature.  With dramatic coastline surrounding bare, wild mountains; ancient Atlantic oak woodland; farm land; croft land; open hill and moor; peat bog; geometrically shaped off shore islands; roadsides ribboned with wild flowers and spectacular views at every corner; rocky inlets and sheltered coves, last but by no means least some brilliant white sand beaches with crystal clear waters.

The diversity in landscape, and in habitat, ensures plenty of interest for observing birds and other wildlife – as in a relatively small area, like here on Treshnish Farm, you can encounter numerous different species.

The Isle of Mull has become famous for its resident sea eagles as there are several successful breeding pairs on the island – and if you are lucky you may see them here at Treshnish.

There is a viewing Hide managed by the RSPB between here and Tobermory at Loch Frisa.

Calgary Beach:

The most well known of our local beaches is Calgary Beach (voted one of the World's Top 50 Beaches) - with its clear, shallow turquoise waters lapping on sparkling white shell sands, perfect for paddling and for swimming.  At low tide a wide expanse of beach provides the perfect place for picnics, building sand castles and beach games.  There are nesting sand martins to watch (at a distance please!), oyster catchers and shelduck to name but a few - and you might see a fin or two from dolphins or basking shark.

Places to go:

There are pretty villages (such as Dervaig) and Tobermory, the island's colourful 'capital' with its uniquely painted seafront and good selection of shops, restaurants, a small Museum and also, now the home of Mull Theatre  as well as An Tobar, the venue for art exhibitions and organisers of great musical events throughout the season.  Duart Castle is a fortified stronghold in a dramatic location overlooking the Sound of Mull - the seat of Clan MacLean. - it is open to the public and well worth a visit.

Awards:

2011 was an Award winning year for us, and we are very proud of our achievements - both on the farm and in the cottages.  We have held a Gold Award with the Green Tourism Business Scheme for 8 or 9 years now, and in 2011 we were delighted and extremely proud to win two additional GTBS Green Tourism Awards (Goldstar and Best Carbon Footprint), making us 'one of the top 10 Green Tourism Businesses in the UK' and the RSPB UK Nature of Farming Award means we can call ourselves one of the 'UK's most wildlife friendly farmers'!  More details here.

Dogs:

Although this is a working livestock farm, we welcome responsible dog owners with their dogs!

Look no further for summer orchids and carpets of wildflowers...dogs welcome...close to lovely sandy beaches...rewarding wildlife opportunities...coastal walks...sea views...wood burning stoves...library full of books...hens...silence...clear skies at night...

Website:

We hope that looking through our website will answer any questions you may have about the sustainable holiday accommodation/eco cottages here at Treshnish Farm and explain the environmentally friendly methods we employ on the farm to encourage Conservation of the varied wildlife habitats found here.
