CHOOSING A COTTAGE

Choosing Treshnish or Haunn:

When we first came to live here in 1994,  the difference between the Treshnish Cottages and the Haunn Cottages was enormous and it was important to emphasise the extremes of the two sites so that guests chose the right place to stay.  Now that the comforts and amenities of all the cottages are all of a similar standard - in that they all have electricity now and meet Visit Scotland standards for 3 or 4 stars, it is the difference in location that we like to make clear.

The extra mile drive from the Treshnish farmstead out to Haunn can feel a lot further than a mile as the track winds its way through grass fields with lots of gates to open and close. The time (about 20 minutes) it takes to arrive at Haunn sets the difference between the two locations.  It can feel as if you have stepped out of time.  The sense of quiet and timelessness is wonderful to those who understand and are comfortable with remote places - but it is not necessarily the same for everyone looking to holiday on Mull!  The farm track is unsealed and we endeavour to keep it in satisfactory condition for ordinary cars to drive slowly along.  We don t consider it necessary ourselves to have a 4 wheel drive living here.

Sunset at TreshnishThe Treshnish cottages are situated beside and near a working farmyard,  just under a mile from the public road along the slow unmetalled farm track. Each cottage is individually and comfortably furnished and, we think, full of character; with electric storage heating and double-glazing. Grassy fields lead to the Treshnish shoreline from each cottage. You might hear a corncrake, and you can watch gannets diving into the sea!

Being a stock farm, Treshnish is not a particularily 'noisy' farm unless you count cows mooing in the fields, sheep calling on the hill and chickens in the farmyard as noisy.  The main working of the farm (the farm building - where the cattle live in winter - and the sheep handling facilities) are tucked away out of sight from the Treshnish cottages, some distance away from the original farm square.

East, Middle and West are 'blackhouses' - an historic name reflecting the original smoky interior.  Each one now has a 'clean burn' stove and a mixture of underfloor and storage heating, along with thick insulation meaning they are very easy to warm and are clean and bright inside!  Originally each one would have been home to a family with as many as a dozen children, all sleeping within the thick stone walls.  By present day standards the blackhouses at Haunn are small. They provide perfectly comfortable accommodation for 2; whilst East and West have an option of adding +2 respectively.

There is walking access from all the cottages, you can enjoy walking along the coast, visiting the medieval sites on the headland, spotting wild flowers, abundant wildlife and exciting sightings of red deer, eagles and otters
